Irabor says Nigerian league needs repackaging

The Chairman, League Management Company, Nduka Irabor, said in Lagos on Tuesday that lack of a title sponsor was part of the challenges facing the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Irabor said this in an interactive session with the Lagos State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria at the National Stadium.

He also said that the problem of broadcast rights between Total Promotions and Globacom required to be addressed for the competition to move forward.

Irabor said the 2012/13 league season, which would end in September, required proper packaging.

“The LMC is appointed by  the NPFL to oversee the progress of the domestic football league in Nigeria. Part of the challenge is to keep the league regardless of a title sponsor.

“We have two cheques as at now from Globacom but we need them to understudy what we have presented as our format for the league. Total Promotions also want contractual agreements but things have to be done in the right order,” he said.

“There are existing laws guiding our football clubs, players and youth teams but the clubs have not adhered to it.

“By our contractual arrangements, our league should worth N300 million for any club to be part of it.

“This is what will aid a good football league where our players will receive the necessary worth of their jobs,” he added.
