NEWS:Woman Beheaded in Akwa Ibom

A middle-aged woman identified as Magdalene Malachy Udoekpong, 42, from Ukara Odoro in Ika Local Government of Akwa Ibom State was, on Monday, beheaded in her farm in Ohambere, Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State. Udoekpong, mother of nine, was alleged to have been murdered by unidentified indigenes of Azumini at about 8.00am while working in her farmland.

According to her family; “Mrs. Udoekpong left her village to Ukara Odoro at about 6.00am to Ohambere community, where she had her farm but, her younger sister who went there later with a view to assisting her was shocked to see her sister’s headless body lying stone cold in pool of her blood.

An elder in Ika Local Government Area, who did not want his name mentioned, said at least three indigenes of Ika Local Government Area have been reportedly missing within the last one year.

He said property worth hundreds of millions of naira were destroyed when on September 24, 2012, some youths believed to be indigenes of Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State attacked the area.

National Mirror gathered that the attack was said to have started when youths alleged to be indigenes of Azumini on a burial procession of their paramount ruler, went berserk on reaching Ikot Uko village, a boundary community between Abia and Akwa Ibom State.

The irate youths, it was gathered, wrecked havoc in the village, maiming and capturing innocent villagers besides pulling down all signposts bearing the insignia of Akwa Ibom State, claiming that the area belongs to Abia State.

Eye witness account indicated that aside from the three people abducted, 13 others sustained varying degree of injuries from their attackers. Cars and houses were vandalised while about four motorcycles were burnt.

Reacting, the Chairman of Ika Local Government Area, Chief Saviour Enyiekere, who expressed shock at the murder of Udoekpong, appealed to the people, especially youths in the area to remain calm and warned against reprisal attack.

Enyiekere assured the people that government would do everything within its power to provide adequate security in the area, with a view to forestalling further killings and destruction of property by the people of Ukwa East Local Government Area.

Efforts to speak with the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson, proved abortive as his number was said to have been unavailable
