While many designers stateside are opting for off-site venues for their runway shows because of the high costs to present at Lincoln Center, some in Milan are having no such problem: going for excess as the fashionable city has long been known to do. Philipp Plein is one such designer upping the ante when it comes to putting on his catwalk presentations, having hired songstress Rita Ora to perform before sending Naomi Campbell out in his first look for his Fall 2014 collection.
Queen Mother Naomi’s first look? A black fox fur collar suede coat embellished with Swarovski crystals layered over skin-tight leather pants which were adorned by a large belt buckle, anchored with a pair of studded boots. The theme “urban cowgirls” couldn’t have been any clearer.
Red and black tartan continued the Western theme on sexy lace-trim slipdresses, ruffle mini skirts, pointed-toe booties, and top-handle totes, given a tough edge with black leather.
Denim was given a glamorous and glitzy spin with beaded detailing and studs. Plein showed us all how to make the classic luxe when pairing it with fur coats, sequin blouses, shimmering crossbody bags, and adorned booties.
There’s no doubt that the young and stylish set including Rita Ora, Nicki Minaj, and Lady Gaga will gravitate toward the collection’s designs while out and about at fashionable parties and quite possibly onstage. A star cutout tulle LBD with lace detailing can definitely work for the red carpet, while the selection of lace-up leather pants might be just the thing for a concert with a crop top.
Thoughts on Philipp Plein’s Fall lineup?
Instead of focusing on the bright African prints and lustworthy shoes, commenters were more dismayed at the lack of diversity on Stella’s runway.
Stella Jean, who is half Haitian and half Italian, is known for her vibrant kente and ankara printed separates, mixed with European menswear tailoring. She, however, didn’t use any black models in her Spring 2014 show. Out of 30 looks for Fall 2014, 3 were modeled by women of color.
@SoulfulSwag wrote, “Who’s her audience? I hate when some African based designers only use Caucasian models! Are you afraid your clothing won’t sell if you actually use black models?”
@KidCadaver went on to look at Jean’s Instagram page, noting, “Stella Jeans IG, when viewed in the aggregate, looks odd for its overwhelming presentation of white models in ‘African’ inspired clothing.” @AsamPete added, “I just viewed her IG page and I must say I am disappointed in her lack of model diversity.”
Bethann Hardison has been spearheading the movement for Diversity on the Runway since 2008. I agree that it would be nice to see a few more women of color on Stella’s runway, though she did use a handful this season.
The bottom line is: designers still believe that women of color, particularly black/brown women, can’t sell clothes. The common belief is also that black women are not the target luxury customer; they’re not the ones buying the bulk of merchandise, so why cater to them by including them in advertisements or in runway shows?
We obviously know this line of reasoning is false. Still, this season in Milan, some of our favorite fashion houses, including Etro, Dolce & Gabbana, and rapper’s delight Versace only used one black model on their runways.
Perhaps Stella is simply following in the footsteps of her colleagues, keeping diversity to a minimum as to not ‘shake the table.’ Jean is based in Italy–perhaps she believes her runway models truly reflect her consumer base. Jean is also half white. Maybe she identifies more with her Caucasian lineage than her Haitian heritage, despite her design aesthetic.
The bottom line is: diversity is the ideal for us at The Fashion Bomb and for people like Bethann Hardison, Naomi Campbell, and Iman. It would be great if diversity were the ideal for all designers–especially those of color; especially since there are so few designers of African descent showing on an international scale.
But it’s clearly not a priority for everyone. And I guess that’s their prerogative.

Supermodel/TV Personality Heidi Klum and her singer ex-hubby are said to be back together following her breakup with her bodyguard boyfriend last month.
Heidi filed for divorce from Seal in 2012 and shortly after, began a relationship with her bodyguard Martin Kristen but called it quits with him in January. The breakup with Martin is reported to have created room for a reunion with Seal, who is the father to 3 of her 4 children.
An insider told THEFix; “Late last year, their daughter Lou was quite upset about not seeing her dad as much,”
“In the end, the couple decided to co-parent a lot more, attending sports games together etc.”
“Then in the last couple of weeks, that turned into long dinners at the house, longer stays with the kids and then sleepovers. They’re even kissing in front of the kids now. It’s very much back on.”

The popular celebrity photographer Toni Tones has in the last few months been making some moves – and now she says she’s ready to let us in on her ‘take over’ plan.
After dropping the camera (just for a moment!) and debuting her acting career in an upcoming TV/Web series ‘Gidi Culture‘, Toni has revealed she’s been recording, hoping to pursue a career in music.
Jokingly called the ‘Mavin bot‘ after her vocals made it to the Don Jazzy produced Mavin album ‘Solar Plexus‘, Toni has worked with Mavin Records‘ Baby Fresh on her new single ‘I know what you like‘ which she describes as a fun afro-pop song.
Check out stills from her new shoot.
